Monday, 15 June 2009 08:01

Share/Save/Bookmark

Want to learn more about the history of Joomla, the top features of Joomla 1.6, and more? Then listen in as Mike interviews Andrew Eddie, long time contributor to the Joomla project. Mike and Andrew discuss:

  • The origins of Joomla, including its origins from Mambo.
  • The top features in Joomla 1.6, including comments, ACL (access control lists), nested categories, and more. Lots of cool things I didn't know about!
  • Things to look out for in Joomla 1.6—take note that there won't be any backwards compatibility with Joomla 1.0 or 1.5.
  • How will migration to 1.6 work?
  • Then we briefly say goodbye to Joomla 1.0, which won't be supported past July.

This interview will span two episodes, so be sure to check for the conclusion where we talk about the future of Joomla, and his favorite and least favorite feature of Joomla.

That was great learning more about Joomla 1.6 and the Joomla project itself. Now you're going to make me wait another two weeks for part 2?

The episode went well and I love Andrew's Australian accent, totally cool! Oh, and I wanted to comment on bringing in the video tutorials into the podcast. I would love it and think it's a good idea.
Keep up the good work!

Great interview!

I got more from that interview than I have following the 1.6 blogs around the net. Now that we (my company) have a successful web design and hosting business based on Joomla, we're finding people struggle with the backend and Joomla concepts (i.e articles, modules, components, menus, plugins, etc.) There's a LOT of moving parts to Joomla.

We have offset a some of problems with good training and different administrator templates (thank you JoomlaPraise) but, customers still struggle with administering the system.

I think we all need to take a step back and think more about ease of use with possibly a dual Joomla administration feature (simple & advanced). The reason is that once you throw an ACL and nested categories into the mix, look out support lines!!

What my business will probably do is ride the 1.5 wave as long as possible so that we can figure out how to soften the blow with the complexities of an ACL and nested categories.

Speaking of that, I can see the mayhem when trying to train/explain the need for both sections and nested categories. I'm even confused by that one. That really is overlap functionality IMHO

I think 1.5 is good enough for 90% of the CMS sites and only falls down in corporate environments. Maybe it's time to think about 2 branches, user and corporate where the corporate is really for business who have staff you can train to maintain a site like this and whom can also afford a staff.

We recently rolled out an intranet for a client which took 5 months to build out. The ACL and nested categoires will give the corporate group the power they desire but the learning curve again is sometimes a barrier.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for writing. I think you're spot on for the most part. I myself wonder what the uptake will be for 1.6--since there's no backwards support we'll have to see how quickly extension makers support it.
